YOUR VOICE opinions on the street

-

Chris Hani District Municipality has embarked on an operation to remove expired edible goods from shelves in shops around the district. Edible items in bulk were removed and disposed of by the district. The Rep reporter, Uviwe Jara, took to the streets to ask people what they think about shops that sell expired items.

Vuyolwethu Ntantiso from Bede

The government should send inspectors monthly to the shops to evaluate food from the shops, especially those owned by foreign nationals because on they do not take the time to check expiry dates on items.

They stock in bulk and do not want to lose by removing expired items, so monthly inspections can assist in fighting expired items on the shelves.

Babalwa Ntantiso from Thulandivile

I sent a child to buy bread for me from a shop that is owned by a foreign national and it turned out the bread had expired.

When I returned it, the owner swore at me and so I threw bricks at him.

I think they need to go home because they sell expired items.

Eating expired food is unhealthy and dangerous.

Mimi Sampu from Thulandivile

The foreign nationals are wrong for selling expired items because we are getting sick from their food and our children are victims as well.

They are wrong in selling expired items but I do not want them to leave because we have children with them.

When they leave, what are we going to do because our South African men will not take care of our children.

Nokulunga Ndeleni from Mlungisi

Foreign nationals selling expired items are killing us. They need to be sent back home whether they have legal papers to be here or not. Some are also feeding our children with drugs so they have no right to be here.

We do not need them and the government must have a firm hand against them to better our lives.

Derrick de Klerk from Newrest

Councillors or the government should get proper inspectors every month to check for expired items at shops.

To close these shops will never be a solution because our people are not keen on running shops. There will always be complaints against our own people running shops. These guys sell everything so you don’t have to go far. They must just be inspected.
