Community hike packs in area’s struggle history

- ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA

To promote Mabelentombi Mountain as a local tourist attraction, Ikomkhulu lakuNgqwaru traditional leaders will be hosting the first-ever hike in Cofimvaba on Saturday.

The hike, which is expected to have 50 participants, will start at 7am. Hikers are encouraged to arrive early with their hiking sticks, sufficient water and snacks to prepare for the incline.

The slogan of the journey is: “Come and join me as I explore the land of my forefathers ” .

Ikomkhulu lakuNgqwaru spokesperson Zwelizolile Qongqo said community members were excited about the initiative, which was an opportunity to celebrate the mountain’s importance to the local culture and history.

Ngqwaru village is part of a series of national liberation heritage routes and commemorates the struggle for freedom. These routes highlight places where significant struggle events took place, where there were battles, protests and gatherings that helped to shape the country’s history. The routes remind walkers of the sacrifices made by those who fought for freedom and equality.

Qongqo said: “The free-ofcharge hike is being organised by Zibongile Mnyamana, and everyone is welcome to participate. The community is excited about this event.

“Mabelentombi mountain and Ngqwarhu village have historical significance. The Battle of Ngqwaru was fought next to the hills.”

The route starts on the R61 next to the Ngqwaru Clinic, which is supported by the Komani Multi-Sports Club.

Qongqo said the walk would take half a day and would be opened by Inkosi Lifulinzima Sabata.

“While it is intended as exercise, our vision is to promote tourism by highlighting the beauty of the hills.”
