Closure of Queenstown SPCA confirmed by national body
The Queenstown SPCA is closing.
In a statement, the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) said it regretted the decision but it was only made after “exhaustive efforts to establish a permanent committee within the community proved unsuccessful”.
It stated: “The NSPCA has maintained a staff presence at the Queenstown SPCA following the removal of the previous committee due to irregularities.
“Despite our best efforts, the interim committee could not be replaced by a permanent committee from within the community.
“It is essential to clarify that the closure is not due to any lack of co-operation or support from the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality.
“The NSPCA has enjoyed a positive relationship with the municipality, and they have been supportive of our efforts.
“However, without a functioning permanent management committee, the SPCA cannot remain open.
“The NSPCA is aware that the previous management committee has established their own welfare organisation, known as Paw’s Awhile.
“We encourage members of the public to reach out to them for animal welfare concerns.
“The NSPCA remains committed to animal welfare in Queenstown and will continue to explore avenues to ensure the well-being of animals in the area, with the possibility of an NSPCA-funded regional inspector.
“As is always done, the NSPCA will continue to inspect premises such as the abattoir, large animal pound and emerging farmer feedlot in Komani, and also ensure the welfare of the town’s farm animals. We thank the community for their ongoing support.”
