Litter bugs are no match for Breakers

The Breakers’ team-building exercise on Saturday took the form of a community clean-up, with the players tackling overgrown grass and garbage along Robinson Road, one of the busiest streets in Komani.

The local rugby team plans to continue with similar initiatives in future to make a lasting impact on the community.

Club marketing manager Asanda Bibil said they identified a part of the town that needed a hand.

“We’’re tackling the overgrown grass and garbage on the streets,” Bibili said.

“This is our first cleaning project and we plan to make it part of the club’s culture whenever we have time, or we might do something different to make a difference.”

He said Truda sponsored a truck, cleaning equipment and materials.

Breakers head coach Thabo Sokwebe said: ”We’re off from friendly matches this week, so we’re using the break to do something for the community.

“Our U21 team was supposed to play against WSU today, but five players were selected to play for the seven-aside team. They’re taking part in a camp in East London, which ends on Sunday.”

Sokwebe said that the team were working together to clean Robinson Road, a busy street that needed some attention. The team was divided into five groups, with a total of 24 players taking part in the campaign. More players were expected to join later.

Regarding upcoming games, he said that the team’s management was still discussing the next fixture. Although the team were on a break, he said the original plan was to play a game every weekend.
