Youth invited to pen a great essay
Writing competition carries R10k prize money
ATarkastad resident has challenged high school youths to pen fascinating, profound and vibrant essays on “The responsibility of youth in society” and win R10,000.
But the cash must be used in a positive way, organiser Xolani Joka said.
The essay competition is open to grade 11 and 12 pupils and recent matric graduates who are under the age of 25.
Xolani Joka hopes to instill values in participating youth that will encourage them to take a stand in the community and understand their role in bringing about much-needed improvements.
The essay project was a platform for youth to share their ideas and experiences, to become engaged and passionate about making a difference in their town.
Joka wants to inspire and encourage the youth by offering them a positive outlet for their creativity and energy.
“You have a role in society. You have the power to make a difference,” he told them.
The event is being sponsored by individuals who “care about
Tarkastad and its youth. The winner will receive a cash prize of R10,000, which can be used in a way that aligns with the sponsors’ goals and values.
“A discussion will be held with the winner to ensure that the money is used in a way that makes an impact.”
He said members of the community would form a committee and select the best essay.
In late February, Joka announced that he, along with
Vuyokazi Mtshiselwa, Siya Banzana, and Malusi Breakfast, had organised an annual interschool sports tournament.
“The tournament is for under 11, 14 and 18 soccer and netball teams. The purpose is to bring back sports culture in schools. We hope to expand the tournament to include a wider range of sports codes.
“To make this possible, we need additional sponsors and for more community members to get involved,” he said.
