Camaraderie and friendship win in Barbarians vs Class of 2014 game

- UVIWE JARA

In an entertaining match-up filled with roaring camaraderie, the Barbarians took down the Class of 2014 in a one-sided 505 rugby lesson at The Rec on Friday, as part of Queen’s College’s 166th Reunion.

The Barbarians started with a five-point early try that put them in good stead. Conversions and penalties were not allowed as part of the free-flowing friendly spirit of the game.

The Class of 2014 pulled up their socks but their efforts to cross the line were blocked by the waiting Barbarian defence.

Then it was the Class of 2014 who found themselves waiting for the Barbarians who poured over their line taking their lead to 50.

Among the point scorers for the Barbarians were Sivatho Mbasane, Siphelele Ngxishe, Juan du Preez, Nicholas Shank, Siya Konki, Solule Molotwana,

Phawu Mantashe and Thabo Makuta.

The Class of 2014 got their consolation try when Benjamin Siyaya managed to cut through the tight Barbarians’ defence.

Barbarians coach Bantu Mbityana, from the year of 2000, is a Queen’s College SGB member and chairperson of the East London QC Old Boys branch.

Mbityana said: “The Barbarians have a history of playing this match every Reunion where we play against the year of 10 years ago which, this year, was the Class of 2014.

“What happened today was a good display of some chaps that haven’t played together and we were able to put 50 points on the board.

“I am happy with the performance and we look forward to hosting this again next year.

“There was a nice camaraderie among the boys, reminding each other of their rugby playing days but in a nice and soft way,” he said.

Mbityana said the game was important as new friendships were built – with the players from different years.

But Reunion rugby had brought them together to meet and talk.

“It’s important for the old boys to have something to look forward to when they come back, not just watching the boys on Saturday. They also feel part of the weekend,” he said.

Ayanda Kanuka, Class of 2014 coach, said: “We were outplayed because of the numbers, they managed to beat us with their rolling subs but all in all the score does not reflect the game.

“They only ran away with the game in the second half when we had tired legs.

“The year of 2014 did us proud and we will be joining the Barbarians next year.”
