Bobbies are pushed hard by Komga

- MAXWELL LEVINE

It was a thrill-a-minute affair in Komga when defending Border Super League rugby champions EL Police faced a fierce and stubborn Komga United — nicknamed Marikana — but overcame them in a nail-biting 29-24 win.

The unfashionable Marikana have made everyone stand up and take note. They are earning rave reviews for their performance against a Police side who have been dominating all opponents.

The Bobbies, though are still setting the pace on the log, with a full haul of 10 points from two matches.

Swallows, in an unforgiving mood, thrashed Berlin Tigers 49-0 for the highest score of the weekend.

Played at the NU1 stadium in Mdantsane, this was not the biggest win on record but was the sort of non-contest which gives a competition a bad name.

There was something dispiriting about the inevitability of the marauding try fest.

But the story of the day was that Swallows are a different team to the struggles they faced in 2023. They have turned their fortunes for the good.

The win makes it two out of two for Nyoni, which elevated them to second on the log.

There is plenty of talk that Tigers are digging a hole for themselves. Two big defeats in a space of two weeks, conceding 149 points, have raised eyebrows.

Another side on the upward trajectory are Old Selbornians, who continued to show good form with a 17-9 win away at Moonlight.

Old Boys are unbeaten after two rounds and are third on the log.

Fort Hare Blues returned to action after their Varsity Shield hiatus to beat Young Leopards 21-14.

Young Leopards must quickly awaken from their Super

14 dream and face the reality of the Super League — you have to pitch up and work for your points.

Buffaloes registered their first victory of the season, seeing off Ncera Leopards 21-17.

In the Premier League, Black Eagles have been riding the crest of the wave. They have surprised everyone by being relegation candidates in 2023 to topping the log in 2024.

It’s a massive turnaround for the Tsolomnqa outfit. They won again, this time beating Ntlaza Lions 12-6.

Fort Beaufort United are gradually revealing their intent, showing composure in seeing off Cambridge 13-0. They are quietly going about their business and that has seen them move to second on the log, unbeaten on eight points. Cambridge's struggle continues, as it has for some time.

Africans bounced back from last week’s setback to clinch a morale-boosting 18-0 win over Bussy Boys. It should kick-start their charge up the log and develop into a challenge for the honours at the end of the season.

Ocean Sweepers won 15-12 away in Nqamakwe against a winless Ngculu Zebras, while in Mthatha, WSU Eagles were too strong for Wallabies, beating them 19-10.

United Brothers remain on course with a 13-7 win over Winter Rose.

Only three teams remain unbeaten — Black Eagles, FB United and United Brothers. Fixtures:
