Too much sugar turns killer
LONDON: Too much sugar in the blood “kills” good cholesterol, raising the risk of heart disease, claims new research. Scientists at the University of Warwick found a substance formed by the sugar in blood known as methylglyoxal, or MG, alters the structure of HDL – or good cholesterol – which normally removes excess “bad” LDL cholesterol. This change makes the HDL cholesterol less effective, and sometimes the body removes all of this good cholesterol from the blood.
Low levels are linked to heart disease, while raised levels of MG are common in diabetics. The report in journal Nutrition and Diabetes suggests this may carry a 9 percent risk of heart disease. – Daily Mail
