1 020 rhinos poached this year

THE NUMBER of rhinos poached in South Africa this year so far was 1 020, the Department of Environmental Affairs announced yesterday. This already exceeds the 1 004 that were poached for the whole of last year, a statement released by the department yesterday. The Kruger National Park, where 672 of the animals have been killed, has again borne the brunt of the poaching. Another 110 have been killed by poachers in Limpopo, 84 in KwaZulu-Natal, 70 in Mpumalanga, 58 in North West and 15 in the Eastern Cape. There were 344 people arrested in connection with rhino poaching. – Sapa
