2 wounded as cops foil hijacking

A MOTORIST and a policeman were shot and wounded when an armed gang hijacked a truck transporti­ng cigarettes near Randfontei­n yesterday, police said. The two were hit during a shootout between the police and the gang of about 12 men, Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said. The incident occurred at 6am on the R28 between Sebokeng and Randfontei­n, after police got a tip-off. They spotted three vehicles parked on the side of the road and the occupants opened fire. The truck was found in a nearby field, where the hijackers were transferri­ng the cigarettes onto the back of a bakkie. The wounded were taken to hospital. Police are searching for the suspects in a BMW, a Kia bakkie and a Moran SUV. – Sapa
