JOSHCO was established to become “a world-class social housing provider” that also develops and manages liveable neighbourhoods for communities. In order to do that, the company committed itself to the principles of integrity, excellence, innovation and team work.

From the outset JOSHCO has believed it would not achieve its mandate in isolation, so the company adopted the key principle of teamwork with the aim of showing honesty, transparency and accountability in its dealings with all stakeholders, from the City of Johannesburg to subcontractors and tenants.

JOSHCO works productively and pro- fessionally, making its customers the central focus with the understanding that by treating tenants with respect, they will, in turn, do the same for the organisation and the buildings they live in.

In 2010 JOSHCO was internationally recognised with the United Nations Scroll of Honour. The award was presented to JOSHCO on World Habitat Day in Shanghai, China. The company was given the award for providing innovative social housing products to 30 000 citizens of Johannesburg. An example of JOSHCO’s commitment to efficient and effective service delivery is the clean audit it has received for the last six years.

JOSHCO has invested over R1.8-billion towards making Johannesburg a more sustainable and liveable city. The company has grown rapidly and now employs over 80 full time staff members and uses professional property management systems. JOSHCO has provided more than 7 000 households with a safe, conveniently-located, healthy home and has refurbished or constructed 8 749 units.
