The Star Early Edition

Business would benefit from it

- Lynette Rens Westcliff, Joburg

ROY ISRAELITE (“Daylight saving benefits all”, The Star Letters, November 24) would be surprised to learn that I do understand daylight saving.

Should we put the clocks forward an hour in spring, the Sun would rise an hour later.

Business would still open at the same clock time, which would mean they open an hour earlier than at present. Cape Town would have to conform to these hours, or be out of sync with the rest of the country. They would probably be going to work in the dark, even in summer.

I have to tell Mike Edgar (“It’s about time we advanced our clock”, The Star Letters, November 24) that South African standard time was based on 30° East, not because of the rest of the world, but so that the British possessions in Southern Africa would all be on the same time zone.

A compromise would be to put the clocks one hour forward permanently.
