Mystery around slaying of popular Joburg teacher

- BOTHO MOLOSANKWE

MYSTERY shrouds the brutal killing of a teacher whose body was dumped on the side of the road near the Golden Highway next to the suburb of Lehae near Orange Farm, south of Joburg.

The body of Abrar Ahmed Jibhai, 27, was found with stab wounds in his forehead and bruises on his face. It was not known what the motive for the murder was, as police said he still had his phone on him as well as a wallet with money.

Jibhai was a teacher at Sir John Adamson High School in Winchester Hills in Joburg and taught economics to grades 10, 11 and 12 pupils as well as accounting to Grade 11s.

Allegations are that he was last seen on Sunday evening. It is not clear what his destination had been or who he had been with. He did not travel in his car as it was at the home he shared with his father and two younger sisters in Lenasia Extension 13.

His mother was murdered in 2005 when he was 16 and no one has been apprehended for her murder. According to Captain Mbulaheni Netshivodza of the Lenasia SAPS, two women stumbled upon a man’s body on Monday morning while walking in Lehae near Zakariyya Park and informed the police.

Around 10pm on Tuesday, Jibhai’s family went to the police to report him missing. This was after they had looked for him since Sunday evening as well as the whole of Monday and Tuesday. They had also tried to call him but his cellphone was off.

Netshivodza said police remembered that there was a body that had been found the previous day, and they called Jibhai’s family to identify whether it could be that of their loved one. “They went to the mortuary on Wednesday and found it was him,” he said.

Jibhai was buried that night. Netshivodza said they had been able to establish that Jibhai was murdered somewhere on Sunday night, then dumped. “There was no blood at the scene, no footprints or signs of a struggle.”

Jibhai’s family were too distraught to speak yesterday.

Gauteng Education Department said Jibhai was a brilliant teacher who was well loved.
