Container Yard set to pulsate with Grietfest’s high energy
4 000 people expected to attend the electric dance music rave
THE DUSTY multicoloured shipping containers at The Container Yard in City Deep, Joburg, will come alive this weekend as the annual Grietfest kicks off in all its dance, drum and bass intensity.
The annual electronic dance music (EDM) festival, in its sixth year, will be taking place from tomorrow at 1pm and is expected to continue into Sunday morning.
Griet co-owner and organiser Johan Auriacombe was excited to speak about what people can expect. “Grietfest is a fest in the Container Yard, where we’ve created an amazing space for people to dance, meet new people and have fun. We make sure we have a mix of legends and young blood when we choose the acts that will perform every year. The big acts get to headline the main stage and the young blood also get to play.”
The line-up includes international acts like Dimension (UK), Lektrique (Kannibalen Records/ Belgium) and Proxy (Turbo Records/Russia) as well as local artists like Sibot and Toyota. Others are Thor Rixon, Narch, Yeti, Killer Robot, White Nite and Pop Art.
Auriacombe picked out two acts that he thought the crowd would particularly love, one of them being Pop Art. “They have such a good energy live. People are going to love them. Them along with Thor Rixon from Cape Town.”
The all-day dancing also includes an after-party at the And club in Newtown.
Auriacombe said organisers would pay close attention to how the music would be received.
He said the layout of the stages and containers, as well as the attention to the visual elements, was made with the audience in mind.
“We always have great visuals because it brings so much to the show. We have a visual jockey who makes you sink into the music.”
Organisers expect more than 4 000 people tomorrow and have tried to ensure festival-goers have everything they need.
“The organisation gets better every year. If you were there last year you’ll immediately feel an improvement.”
To avoid the dustiness of the last fest, there’ll be a water truck tomorrow.
Tickets are R280 today from plankton.mobi or R300 at the gate.
