Mashaba set to unveil new team to help steer Joburg

JOBURG mayor Herman Mashaba was expected to announce his mayoral committee at noon today following a meeting with his political party, the DA.

The Black Like Me founder reportedly said he aimed to have a professional administration from the mayor down to the lowest member of the public service.

The entrepreneur, according to a statement by the city, would inform the DA caucus during a meeting this morning on who will be appointed to the top 10 councillor posts.

Repeated attempts to get comment from Mashaba were in vain as he was in “backto-back meetings”, according to a municipal official who answered his phone.

Mashaba took over the reins from the ANC’s Parks Tau after the DA struck a coalition deal with smaller parties, among them Cope and the Freedom Front Plus. The EFF also voted for Mashaba to be the metro’s first citizen during a council sitting at the Joburg City Hall last week.

Mashaba’s colleague, Midvaal mayor Bongani Baloyi, said yesterday he would announce his executive committee during his inauguration ceremony in Meyerton on Tuesday.

“My team is made up of young and old professionals, and it’s quite diverse. I believe they will be able to rise to the task at hand,” said Baloyi. He would use the event at the Meyerton Town Hall “to set the scene and tone of where we are going in the next five years”.

Baloyi said he would also respond to some of the she- nanigans that occurred during the election campaign for the watershed municipal elections earlier this month.

On Wednesday, Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Athol Trollip unveiled what he believed was a “qualified, competent and passionate team” to help run the Eastern Cape metro over the next five years, according to The Herald, a Port Elizabeth newspaper.

The newly elected DA mayor, according to the report, planned to appoint another team of nine councillors to hold the executive accountable.
