Old blood and just no vision

- Muhammad Omar

SUDDENLY the great voice of Awulethe umshini wami has gone silent, given the poor showing of the ruling party.

The loss of metro municipalities, given the trend, will soon extend to rural municipalities and eventually unseat the ANC.

Three months ago, this scenario would have been unthinkable, but given the dissatisfaction, distrust, lack of leadership, doing the same things as in the past is going to achieve the same results.

For the ANC, this will come as no surprise.

Take the metros of Nelson Mandela Bay and Tshwane.

For both to have DA mayors is really a slap in the face, but to start off, look at the candidates – hardly inspiring: old blood, no vision, no plan and no boldness. More business as usual. As for Tshwane, e-tolls was the first warning bell.

Then came the prepaid electricity billing saga, which really showed how the mayor and municipal manager ignored the Treasury’s advice.

This was arrogance at its highest level, and once the new team gets involved, expect more to be exposed.

In all of this, the question to understand is where is the leader of the ANC?

As usual for Zuma, this will be an opportunity to purge dissidents, blame the losses on a poor showing on the province and the net result is to strengthen your rural leadership, which will boost your chances of anointing the next successor.

The ANC must realise a lot more is at issue than who the next successor will be.

If this election has not shaken the leadership, nothing will. Durban North
