Motsoeneng keeps raking it in

- Peter Weitsz

I WAS astounded, as were many other South Africans, to learn that Hlaudi Motsoeneng, temporary chief operating officer of the SABC, has received a bonus of R11.4 million, with a further payment of R33m on the cards, for selling the SABC archives.

In a normal corporate world, this would form part of the basic salary paid to the individual concerned.

These archives belong to the people of South Africa, and should not be sold on the whim of some individual, which in the process means they will be permanently lost, denying us access to the history and heritage of the archives. I just wonder if any of the other employees at the SABC have benefited from the sale.

The high court has ruled that Motsoeneng is not fit and proper to occupy the position of chief operating officer at the SABC.

Yet, despite this ruling, the board has seen it fit to appoint Motsoeneng to the same position on a temporary basis for three months, with no doubt a permanent appointment looming.

Luckily for me, I have other options when it comes to TV viewing and SABC radio, but ironically, I am still required to pay an annual SABC TV subscription.

It seems that as long as Motsoeneng has the undivided support of the communications minister and indeed the president, this untenable state of affairs will continue.

What a pathetic state of affairs indeed, and it will never end probably, not as long as the handouts continue. Plumstead, Cape Town
