Hammerson opens £165m Leeds project

- Roy Cokayne

HAMMERSON, the FTSE 100 European retail property specialist that has a secondary listing on the JSE’s main board, has opened its £165 million (R3 billion) Victoria Gate regeneration project in Leeds in the UK.

The company claims this is the only major retail scheme to launch in the UK this year.

The scheme, adjacent to Hammerson’s Victoria Quarter arcade, forms part of the new 53 400m² Victoria Leeds shopping destination and will create the largest premium retail and leisure venue in northern England.

David Atkins, the chief executive of Hammerson, said yesterday that there was nothing else like it in the UK.

“We are confident that Victoria Gate will set new standards for retail across Europe.

“Victoria Gate will provide a significant contribution to Leeds’ local economy with the city now set to become the undisputed regional shopping capital of the North,” he said.
