An orphan’s prayer for a return to morals

- Ayanda Leonardo Mkhize

I FEEL that today young people of the world have lost their morals and values. Youngsters have lost respect for themselves and people around them.

We can’t, however, blame them for what they are becoming, because they learn and see so much negative stuff from the adults around them.

When a young boy is raised in a family where the father physically attacks the mother, he will grow up thinking that being abusive to women is the right thing to do.

We have so much violence in our homes, and our playgrounds have turned into battle fields. People have lost respect for each other, including the people we call “leaders”.

Our leaders are the ones who are supposed to be setting a good example.

But, instead, many of them have rejected their nation by not leading it in the right direction.

People do so many bad things these days, without considering the consequences.

People do things to benefit themselves, but it often negatively affects the people around them. Look at Nigeria, where more than 200 girls were taken away from their mothers.

The people who did this have no heart to feel the pain they caused those girls and their families; parents couldn’t sleep at night thinking of and crying for their children.

There seems to be no love or care for other people – it’s all about getting what you want and not worrying about anyone else.

How is life fair when there are some people driving the latest car, whilst others don’t even own a pair of shoes?

Some people end their day without having eaten so much as a single slice of bread.

Where did the word Ubuntu go? Does it even exist in some people’s vocabulary, let alone their hearts?

I think we were given hearts to feel for one another. This is hard to believe, when people are being killed based on their race, culture and religious beliefs.

The day we have freedom in this world, will be the day people stop discriminating against one another and criticising each other.

It will be the day people stop caring whether you are black or white, and instead start accepting every human as they are.

It will be the day people have peace in their countries and live without fear of being attacked.

On that day, people will be able to share their ideas and thoughts without living in fear of the repercussions. For now, we can only dream about being free.

All people have to play a role in order to achieve freedom; we have to work as one.

I pray for this day. I pray for love and strong leadership. I pray.

For now, we can only dream of being free
