THIS month, citizens, the government and dignitaries have celebrated the life of Chris Hani, who was gunned down 24 years ago on the eve of the country’s transition to democracy.

People from all walks of life came together to remember the life of the former SACP leader, who was murdered in the driveway of his Dawn Park home in Boksburg.

The City of Ekurhuleni has decided to have its own event to commemorate his life.

The metro will conclude the Chris Hani month activities on a high note with musical festivities at the weekend, which the whole family can enjoy.

This is part of a poetry and hip-hop music festival, which will be held in Boksburg tomorrow.

“The Boksburg Lake Amphitheatre will be abuzz with young people celebrating the life of Chris Hani under the theme Chris Hani Free Style Hip Hop and Poetry Expression,” the organisers said in a statement.

Those who attend the event will be entertained by several local talents, which will range from amateur to musical heavyweights.

This includes hip-hop giants such as Kwesta, who will be one of the highlights of the day’s proceedings.

The Ngud’ hit-maker was born in Ekurhuleni, which is also hosting the event.

He will be joined by YFM’s female DJs, such as DJ Zai Maya and DJ ZanD, a radio and television personality who has a weekly Thursday mix on the local radio station’s YTKO feature.

Revellers will also get to enjoy delicacies from Sporo’s Mini Street Cookout and a variety of dance battles.

The event begins at midday at Boksburg Lake.
