Strug­gle he­roes brought home

Rel­a­tives of eight United Demo­cratic Front ac­tivists who were ex­e­cuted by the apartheid govern­ment be­tween 1986 and 1989 vis­ited the gal­lows at Kgosi Mam­puru II Cor­rec­tional Cen­tre (then Pre­to­ria Cen­tral Prison). They then headed to Mamelodi West ceme­tery for the ex­huma­tion of their bod­ies yes­ter­day. (Inset) The re­mains of Welile Gwe­bushe, 29, Ndu­miso Siphenuka, 25, Siphiwe Lande, 22, Sipho Ma­hala, 21, Tsepo Let­soara, 25, Ben­jamin Gxothiwe, 27, Michael Lu­cas, 21, and Menze Makhezwene, 44, were ex­humed from un­marked graves in Mamelodi. They were buried on state prop­erty by the govern­ment af­ter their ex­e­cu­tions.
