Pedestrians, beware of scam

- Shirley (Surname withheld)

MY HUSBAND and I were walking along Victoria Road in Camps Bay and were accosted by a pleasant young man (who claimed to be a Rhodes student) with scratch cards. He insisted we scratch to win – “no strings attached”.

My husband, always accommodating, won a “mystery prize” of sorts and I – the luckiest of wives – won a holiday in either Mauritius, Thailand or Spain! Take your pick but all you need to do to claim the prize is go for a “quick” 60-minute presentation nearby… and breakfast is on them. We declined breakfast, went somewhere else and googled.

Easy Holidays has been operating in these parts for years. It’s a holiday club/ timeshare/vacation clubtype scam, despite the young man’s attempt at fudging the actual nature of their work. Pedestrians, beware! If you sign up, you’re locked into a perpetuity contract. It’s a well-rehearsed scam but we’ve been around the block and seen it all before.
