Refugees lost at sea

SPAN­ISH au­thor­i­ties are still search­ing for sur­vivors af­ter a rub­ber-dingy packed with sub­Sa­ha­ran refugees sunk off the Span­ish coast­line on Tues­day.

The search came ahead of this week’s meet­ing of EU Jus­tice and Home Af­fairs min­is­ters with the UN Mi­gra­tion Agency urg­ing EU mem­ber states to rein­vig­o­rate co-op­er­a­tion in sav­ing more lives in the Mediter­ranean, and to help south­ern EU states to re­ceive and ac­com­mo­date peo­ple res­cued at sea.

Spain said the boat “had been drifting for days af­ter leav­ing Morocco”. Sev­eral sur­vivors, aged be­tween 17 and 25, were rushed to hos­pi­tal.
