Swift-recovery wishes for Rivonia stalwart Goldberg

THE SA Civic Organisati­on (Sanco) has wished Rivonia Trial accused and veteran human rights activist Denis Goldberg, pictured, a speedy recovery after he was admitted to hospital in Cape Town last Monday for treatment of lung cancer.

The 83-year-old ANC and SACP Struggle veteran was tried alongside leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Govan Mbeki, Walter Sisulu, Ahmed Kathrada, Andrew Mlangeni during the Rivonia Trial in 1963/64.

“We are still looking up to selfless cadres and revolution­ary intellectu­als like comrade Denis Goldberg, who waged an unwavering, fearless fight for human rights, for guidance and inspiratio­n as we deal with ethical and moral leadership challenges that the country is facing,” Sanco national spokespers­on Jabu Mahlangu said yesterday.

Goldberg represente­d a generation of courageous leaders and incorrupti­ble and selfless visionarie­s who were committed to nation-building, reconcilia­tion and social cohesion to overcome the legacy of colonialis­m and racism. – ANA
