Green strat­egy gets cab­i­net approval

CAB­I­NET yes­ter­day ap­proved the Draft Green Trans­port Strat­egy de­signed to lower green­house gas emis­sions. The pro­posed strat­egy is to be pub­lished for com­ment, gov­ern­ment spokesper­son Phumla Wil­liams said. South Africa aims to re­duce emis­sions by 34 per­cent by 2020 and 42 per­cent by 2025. The strat­egy aims to min­imise the im­pact of trans­port on the en­vi­ron­ment, while ad­dress­ing current and fu­ture trans­port de­mands based on sus­tain­able de­vel­op­ment prin­ci­ples. How­ever, emis­sions from the trans­port sec­tor ac­count for 10.8 per­cent of the coun­try’s to­tal green­house emis­sions, with road trans­port be­ing re­spon­si­ble for 91.2 per­cent of th­ese emis­sions. – Xin­hau
