Green strategy gets cabinet approval
CABINET yesterday approved the Draft Green Transport Strategy designed to lower greenhouse gas emissions. The proposed strategy is to be published for comment, government spokesperson Phumla Williams said. South Africa aims to reduce emissions by 34 percent by 2020 and 42 percent by 2025. The strategy aims to minimise the impact of transport on the environment, while addressing current and future transport demands based on sustainable development principles. However, emissions from the transport sector account for 10.8 percent of the country’s total greenhouse emissions, with road transport being responsible for 91.2 percent of these emissions. – Xinhau
