Mozambique peace deal

-

MAPUTO: Peace talks between Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi and opposition leader Afonso Dhlakama have been hailed by the country’s former leader, Armando Guebuza, the EU and the US.

“We encourage this initiative and hope that soon we will be living in peace,” said Guebuza.

The meeting between the two sides on Sunday on territory controlled by Dhlakama’s Renamo party took political observers by surprise. The leaders agreed on a peace process which should be concluded by the end of this year, according to the president.
