Protesters to demand Zuma’s resignation
DISGRUNTLED supporters are set to #OccupyLuthuliHouse on Monday in support of their demands for President Jacob Zuma to step down and for the national executive committee (NEC) to go down with him.
Posting under #OccupyLuthuliHouse, people demanded ANC stalwarts form a task team to take the party to a special national conference to elect a new leadership.
Other demands were that the University Fees Commission be disbanded as its mandate “seeks to undermine ANC conference resolutions as it remains the centre of power”.
ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe has said the early conference call was “not a bad idea”, but the SACP has warned against it, saying it would deepen alliance tensions. It suggested a consulta- tive conference instead, to look at ways of unifying the alliance and overseeing a smooth transition to a new leadership.
The ANC is expected to hold its national elective conference in December next year.
Bonolo Ramokhele, an #OccupyLuthuliHouse organiser, tweeted yesterday: “The ANC Youth League is a shadow of its former self and has zero credibility with members on the ground. Similar to ANCWL (Women’s League) and mother body.”
ANCYL national spokesman Mlondi Mkhize told The Star they were not aware of any structure that wanted to stage a sit-in at the ANC headquarters in central Joburg.
Yesterday, Umkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association chairman Kebby Maphatsoe reportedly said the demonstrators would find them at Pixley Seme Street.
