T’S ALMOST September and in Tshwane that means it’s the annual Spanish dance festival. Helena and Maria Lorca Montoya collaborate to present a feast of Spanish dance.

After sold-out performances last year, the much-loved España will return to the Atterbury Theatre on Friday and Saturday.

Helena and Maria are joined by their pupils, professional dancers and guest artists Rosa Jiminez (Rosa Jiminez Spanish Dance Theatre) and Che Adams (Tierra Flamenca), to present an energetic Spanish dance collaboration.

España 2016 is again the collective brainchild of Helena and her daughter Maria and will showcase a range of Spanish dance including regional, neoclassical and flamenco. Jiminez, a regular guest artist with the Montoya Spanish Dance Theatre, will be joined by Adams – a first-time guest artist. She runs the Tierra Flamenca Dance Studio in Cape Town, where she teaches classes for all ages and has received rave reviews after launching her professional company.

With a cast of more than 40 members, dancers ranging in age from 7 years (Maria’s daughter being one of the youngest, and the third generation of Montoyas onto the stage), up to the professional dancers of the company, this show promises a feast of modern and traditional Spanish dance, fiery rhythms and music to suit the mood.

The combination of three different styles – from lead dancers Lorca Montoya, Jiminez and Adams – will give the audience a glimpse of how flamenco is interpreted and performed in individual fashion.
