Some countries in Africa who boast “free” higher education such as Malawi are now among the poorest on the continent.

Teferra refers to some pundits, even those in the sector, who believe “free” university education is possible, but in the light of the demographi­cs of the situation and the failing economy, he concludes: “They are dead wrong.”

One has only to look at Makerere University in Uganda to assess why it’s one of our leading universiti­es in Africa: students have to pay fees.

Of course, poor students need to be assisted and our government recognises this.
