An inspiration to all

UNIVERSITY fees are the bane of almost every student’s life, particularly when you can’t afford them and have no other means or access to credit to get the money needed to continue your studies.

This was the dilemma facing third-year Wits geology student Thuso Magonya, who had to take a financially induced gap year in 2013.

Today’s he has not just been holding down two jobs while he studies, he has become a chocolatier in his spare time, designing and selling bespoke Christmas creations.

He has even started a little business on the side, marrying his love for heritage with his passion for chocolate. It’s even more impressive when you think of his incredibly humble background in rural Limpopo, growing up as one of six children in a mud house.

Sometimes he went to bed hungry. Now Magonya wants to be able to employ 30 people one day. It’s an amazing journey, and he’s an inspiration to us all.
