Six aid workers killed in South Sudan
ANOTHER six aid workers have lost their lives in South Sudan after they were ambushed and killed as they travelled from the capital, Juba, to Pibor town in Jonglei State.
The UN’s humanitarian co-ordinator for the world’s newest and troubled country, Eugene Owusu, confirmed the deaths on Saturday of the humanitarians, it was reported on Sunday.
The staff, from a national non-governmental organisation, were reportedly ambushed in their vehicle in a government-controlled area on the Juba-Pibor road on Saturday morning.
Their bodies were found on the road by other members of the convoy who were some way behind, the Sudan Tribune reported.
“These attacks against aid work- ers and aid assets are utterly reprehensible,” said Owusu.
The killings bring the total deaths of aid workers in South Sudan to approximately 80 since the civil war in the country broke out in 2013.
The attacks on aid workers exacerbate a serious deterioration in the humanitarian situation on the ground which has seen thousands of people killed. – ANA
