Komphela, Hunt still battling to find that magic formula

-

Age: 50 Trophies: None in topflight football. Squad at Chiefs Amakhosi will know that they could have done better in the recent transfer window, especially now that they have three fullbacks out injured. It’s no exaggeration to point out that Chiefs don’t have a team as good as their title rivals Wits, Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United. The win over Cape Town City on Wednesday night has in all likelihood bought their beleaguered coach more time, but it’s difficult to imagine there will be enough consistency there over the 30-game league season. Shelf life Apart from hanging around for three years at Free State Stars in his second stint there between 2010 and 2013, Komphela has never stuck around for more than two years at any of his previous clubs. This is a make or break year for him at Amakhosi, where he has not won a trophy since arriving in July 2015 as a replacement for Stuart Baxter. Komphela has now entered the final year of his contract and has hardly answered his criticism, rather bamboozling them with higher grade English. Players he can trust Siphiwe Tshabalala, Itumeleng Khune and Willard Katsande have all proven they can be relied on, while defender Mulomowandau Mathoho, who is currently serving suspension, has made a strong case why he should be dropped for future games as he struggles for form – at both his club and Bafana Bafana. Komphela also needs a striker who can get to double figures. Gustavo Paez gave the impression he would towards the end of last season and during pre-season, but no longer looks a sure bet as he did little to help Chiefs avoid going three games without a win in all competitions until Wednesday night when goals from Tshabalala and young Wiseman Meyiwa did the trick away against Cape Town City.
