THE FIFTH annual Maftown Heights concert and the Channel O Africa Music Video Awards kept music lovers busy this weekend with top performances from stars including Cassper Nyovest, Khuli Chana, Reason and AKA.

Evah Kgosana, 22, and Oratile Kekana, 24, were the lucky VIP winners of the KFC and Khuli Chana experience.

The two were chosen after KFC launched a competition to find the best verse from one of his songs to caption a picture of Khuli Chana.

“I used the last verse in Freshe and no one else had it,” said Kekana.

He said the experience of spending time with Khuli Chana was rewarding.

“He called to congratulate us and asked us about ourselves. The next day, we were then driven in a limousine to the Shesha store to get outfits and go see him in his Bryanston studios,” he said.

The two had lunch and had the opportunity to ask Khuli Chana questions.

“I could relate to what he was saying about how everything started for him after he got his first pay cheque from HHP, because I’m also in the music scene doing some producing. I also realised I could make a living from this after my first pay cheque,” said Kekana.

For Kgosana, meeting Khuli Chana was a dream. “The experience was really awesome,” she said. “Khuli is so humble.”

Both winners took friends to the concert.

As part of their experience, they also got to re-record the hit song Mnatebawen with the star.

Khuli Chana said the fan experience to him meant getting to know the people who have supported him. “I see the tweets, I see the Facebook messages, but you have a real experience when you get to engage and chill with the fans and get to listen to their stories and just how far back they’ve been bumping your music. It’s awesome,” he said.

Khuli Chana said he believed he would still be around for a long time, because of the motivation he received from fans.

Maftown Heights is becoming one of the biggest hip hop events of the year.

What started as a mini-concert bringing the Motswako artists together has become one of the most epic shows that sees different artists collaborate on the same stage.

“It freaks me out to see just how big it’s become,” he said.
