The Star Early Edition

New Generations finally airs tonight

- MPILETSO MOTUMI

AFTER a two-month hiatus, the much-anticipated soapie Generations returns to our screens tonight with a new cast and storyline.

The last episode of the old show left us all wondering if Mam’Ruby (Slindile Nodangala) would find her daughter, Dineo (Katlego Danke), alive and having to force conclusions to other storylines that were left in the middle of nowhere.

The battle between the show’s creator and the 16 main actors started in August, resulting in the actors being fired for going on strike, seeking the help of Cosatu and the CCMA. Show creator Mfundi Vundla vowed to not only never take the actors back, but also to create a new show without them.

The new soapie, now called Generations – The Legacy, will fast forward to about two years after the September 30 episode.

Connie Ferguson and Rapulana Seiphemo are set to make comebacks. Their characters, Karabo Moroka and Tau Mogale, were fan favourites.

In an interview with SABC’s new digital magazine, Evoke, Ferguson said she had not planned to return to the soapie, but she returned to contribute to the new vision.

Seiphemo said his return would come with more wisdom and maturity as he had had a chance to gain more experience while he was away from the show.

Vundla told the magazine that it was not beginning from scratch, but rather the show was being reinvented “by returning to the DNA which is the Moroka family dynasty”.

The new cast is rumoured to include Letoya Mangezi, of Isidingo fame, Yizo Yizo star Vuyo Dabula, Musa Ngema, who has done the rounds on Rhythm City and 7de Laan, Stokvel and Gazlam’s Manaka Ranaka and Vuzu Entertainment presenter Denise Zimba, who featured on the soapie recently.

What will become of the supporting cast members whose storylines revolved around the axed 16? Well, we will have to wait and see.

The full cast and details will be revealed today.
