- LERATO MBANGENI

THE SOWETO Theatre in Jabulani is serving up a treat for theatregoers this month.

The stage will be home to two award-winning productions from Thursday until March 22.

The first of the offerings is Mhla Salamana, a production directed by Thando Doni about a near-perfect relationship that goes pear-shaped.

The love story opens at the Soweto Theatre on Thursday, and thereafter will be staged on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until March 22.

In the play, Melikhaya, played by Mkhuseli Richard Tafane, and Zanele (Asanda Rilityana) are torn apart by infidelity while their child, Olwethu (Aphiwe Menziwa), is caught in the middle.

Doni said in an interview: “They had never worked theatrically before, but we knew we wanted music.”

The show won the Zabalaza Festival Theatre Award in 2012.

The second treat is Nothing But The Truth, written by award-winning actor and director John Kani.

The play, which is showing in celebration of South Africa’s 20 years of democracy, was first produced in 2002.

It tells a complex South African story about “family, forgiveness, truth, justice, reconciliation and compassion”.

The play toured Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal last year and 9 000 pupils and 400 teachers watched it during the run.

Directed by Phala O Phala, the production features Dambuza Dube, Nombulelo Mhlongo and Samela Tyelbooi.

Both will be performed between 11am and 8pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and at 3pm on Sundays in two different venues.

Tickets are already on sale at R50 for adults and R30 for pupils.
