Let’s work together to rebuild our country

- Mike Erasmus

SOUTH Africans need to step back and reassess their commitment to this wonderful country before we slide further down the path of economic ruin.

No one bats for the country any more. We bat for political parties, religions, race, -isms, cultures but not for the country. The country has not been as polarised as it is now since 1994. We need strong leaders to build bridges between people.

It is also imperative that we create jobs. Small business is being swallowed up by retail and franchise giants.

The cost of setting up a small business is prohibitive.

The local grocery stores, butcheries, bottle stores that used to provide such an important service at reasonable prices are gone. If you want to start a small retail business, you invariably have to open up in a mall and the rentals alone preclude you from making a decent living.

Business leaders are caught up in a capitalist straitjacket on the one hand and political leaders tasked with creating jobs in a communist straitjacket on the other hand and never the twain shall meet.

America seems to be polarised but when the chips are down, it produces the goods. It creates jobs. If you take on one American you take on all of them. Germany, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore came from a hopeless situation after World War II to become economic powerhouses. Rwanda is a great example in what working together can achieve.

Imagine where these countries would be if they were still sitting back blaming Hitler, genocide, whatever, for their ills. Weak leaders live in the past. We need to vote them out.
