IDOLS SA judge and singer Unathi Msengana faced the public’s wrath on Twitter after she allegedly sided with Stellenbosch University’s Afrikaans language policy.

This came after Msengana spoke on her Metro FM morning show about the Luister documentary that depicts how black students feel isolated at the university because of its language policy. The documentary also shows the racist environment black students face.

Msengana allegedly said black students at the university must have known when they enrolled there that Afrikaans was the primary language of the university. The Idols SA judge found herself trending on Twitter, and the hashtag #Unathibelike was created.

Responding to her statements, @artofkawaii tweeted: “Unathi and co were basically saying what white people say to black kids all the time, “you dont like it, go back to the town- ship”.

The hashtag gave examples of how Msengana’s logic apparently failed.

@NthabyNooe tweeted an example: “Person: Street harassment is bad. Unathi: Why don’t you live closer to the bus stop? Or drive home rather? Research, please.”

@Lungisa_Mzizana said: “Me: So much racism at my workplace. Unathi: Maybe if you did your research before you applied you would have known it is.”

“Be fair guys. I know it hurts. you can’t say that Stellies promises only English,” Msengana responded.
