GLAMOUR AT THE MTV MAMAS
Celebration of music was ‘a night for Africa to be proud of’
THE HIGHLY anticipated MTV Africa Music Awards (Mamas) brought Africa together at the Ticketpro Dome in Northgate, Randburg, on Saturday.
Though excitement was high, the live telecast of the award show ran behind schedule and performances were severely shortened.
A moving Mandoza tribute, performed by various kwaito artists, had the entire house up and dancing, but before long they were on to the next performance.
Despite some initial booing from some audience members when commercial host, comedian Tall Ass Mo, introduced Bonang Matheba to the stage, she introduced her links with ease, supported by Nomzamo Mbatha and Yemi Alade.
Seeing that the platform was initially for host of Trevor Noah, Mbatha continually mentioned “black girls’ magic and power is something that can overcome anything”.
The audience cheered when 2016 Olympic gold medallist Caster Semenya was announced the winner of the best personality award.
The athlete was initially lost for words.
After striking her famous cobra pose, she thanked her wife Violet Raseboya for her support.
The recipient of the legend award, Hugh Masekela, was honoured to be recognised for his decades of delivering music for Africa and the world.
“We have to include the suffering of the poor in our music. It’s time to bring our heritage back to our music for that child to remember, when she is asked where she originates from,” Masekela said during his heartfelt acceptance speech.
Although the Dome was not quite filled to capacity, American rapper Future, who was on his first visit to the country, delivered an energetic performance.
The Joburg debut, Mamas experience, according to Viacom vice-president Alex Okosi, was a night that many would remember for a long time.
“This is a night for Africa to be proud of and we are thrilled that the Mamas have once again delivered a powerful platform to celebrate African achievement,” he said.
