Different strokes for different folks…
DIM LIGHTS, sensual pop music, beautiful bodies and an environment fit for all that’s naughty and nice. That’s what can be discovered at Joburg’s premier sex and lifestyle exhibition.
Sexpo, the annual sexuality expo that aims to celebrate all things erotic through its health, lifestyle and sexualitythemed exhibitions, shows and workshops, is on at the Sandton Convention Centre until tomorrow.
One of the perennial favourites, the painter Pricasso, who uses his penis to draw portraits of those brave enough to face his nudity, is ready to share his art with often mesmerised onlookers and subjects.
The expo also hosts stockists of sex toys, designer lingerie, body jewellery and sex-themed cake. It aims to help people lose inhibitions and awkwardness around sex through workshops, live sex shows, a BDSM section, strippers and erotic dancers.
Sexpert and columnist Sharon Gordon, who owns sex and sensuality retail store Lola Montez, said the first step to destigmatising sex was simply to talk about it.
“Religion has made sex a taboo subject; the way we stop making it taboo is by saying it’s a God-given right to explore my body, and to experience and love my body. I wouldn’t have been given it if I wasn’t meant to,” Gordon said.
She didn’t believe the myths surrounding sex were particularly attached to race.
“When somebody says to you masturbation is a sin, you should ask, ‘where does it say it’s a sin? Show me the Scripture’,” she said.
Also at the fair are the Cancer Association of SA and the Salvation Army, there to shed light on sexual-health issues and human trafficking.
For those feeling the need to spice up their sex lives, one of the exhibitors, sex-toy retailer Luvland, promises to be a safe space for people to explore toys, erotic movies and sensual oils without feeling shy, according to one of the regional managers, Kevin Stone.
“What we plan to do at our stalls is show people how to improve their sex lives by means of using toys. There are a variety of toys that are available for men and women, for different occasions.
“We’ve got professional staff members who are ready to explain,” Stone said.
Tickets for the strictly over18 expo are now on sale at R150 from Computicket, and VIP packages are available.
Tickets initially bought for Saturday are valid for today and tomorrow, but need to be exchanged at Computicket. For more information, see www. sexpo.co.za
