GAUTENG Premier David Makhura says the provincial government and the late Joe Mafela’s family are still in discussions over giving him a fitting farewell.

After visiting the actor, comedian and musician’s family at their home in Kew, Joburg, yesterday, Makhura said: “He had an important impact in the lives of ordinary people and family across the length and breadth of the country.

“He was a celebrated actor and musician. Whatever form the funeral will take, I have no doubt that, as the Gauteng provincial government working with the family, we would like to give him a fitting farewell.”

PAC spokesperson Kenneth Mokgatlhe said his party demanded that Mafela, who died over the weekend, be given a provincial funeral.

“His continuous immense contribution at the worst times of apartheid makes him a great man. He continued to inspire and discover the current youthful talents and will always be an embodiment of inspiration to all who wishes to pursue careers in film industry.

“His song Shebeleza is very close to our hearts rather than our ears.”

Mafela, 75, who had starring roles in local series Sgudi ’Snaysi, Going Up and Madam and Eve, died in a car accident.

Close friend and playwright Welcome Msomi said it was still hard to accept the death.

“When someone passes on when they were not sick you go through some kind of trauma. You keep telling yourself that it is not true.”

He said Mafela had a passion for teaching young people about the arts.

“He did master classes with young people. We were planning a series of these master classes in various communities because he enjoyed being a part of them.”

Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Faith Mazibuko said: “He was one of those people who made sure that artists are taken seriously.

“He was a champion in bringing joy to the community. We are here to tell the family that they are not alone in this sadness, but the whole of Gauteng is mourning with them.”

A memorial service for Mafela was to be held at the Joburg Theatre at 11am today.
