We need evolution, not revolution, in SA

- Paul Suter

BY CELEBRATING the upcoming Freedom Day we have a chance to reflect where we are, where we want to go and how far we have come since South Africa gained its freedom.

Looking back, an even more important question becomes apparent: “What are we doing or not doing with this multi-meaning item called freedom?” Maybe it’s time to scrutinise if it is only political freedom that we gained at the expense of neglecting something just as important that can set us free.

To what extent that gained political freedom has already been going downhill reminds us that we are mostly still prisoners trapped within ourselves in our stew of unethical, dishonest, selfish, egocentric, self-fraudulent and corrupt-minded tendencies and behaviour, punctured by fear, worry, vanity, jealousy, envy, greed, hypocrisy and filled with many other negative emotional energies, including hate, anger and revenge.

All of them are far away from the healing energy (power) of love and peace. Are we aware that it’s all those destructive negative energies that mostly contribute to dragging us downhill? Shouldn’t we be using our gained freedom to free ourselves from these depressing burdens?

Give them away, get rid of them, surrender them, don’t embrace them, exchange them for something lighter, not only for ourselves, but for others too (the concept of forgiveness). To what extent are we aware that we posses them, or rather they posses us?

Wouldn’t our world be a far better place if most of us were in possession of more subtle and constructive energies like courage, neutrality and tolerance, acceptance, reasoning and understanding, harmony, compassion, forgiveness, love, the joy of life, happiness and peace? A new Freedom Charter in this direction would surely benefit mankind and help to uplift us from where we are.

Wake up! Forget about revolution, it spoils. Go for evolution, as it just builds up and everything turns out gracefully. Well, haven’t you seen it? That’s what our Madiba did and look how it transformed him and where it brought him?

So, celebrating Freedom Day should also remind us to be thankful to him and appreciate that we are able to choose where we want to apply and build up our freedom in a divine manner. He gave us an excellent example and we named it “Madiba magic”.

Enjoy a delightful and insightful Freedom Day! Fontainebleau, Randburg
