Herzberg’s African sculptures and art from Brink collection on offer

MEMORABLE works from the estate of celebrated South African author André Brink will form part of the primary theme, “Three Collectors, Three Collection­s”, of Stephan Welz & Co’s major fine art and design auction in Cape Town on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Brink, who died in 2015, wrote in English and Afrikaans.

The sale will take place at The Great Cellar, Alphen Estate in three sessions on Tuesday, starting at 10am, and two sessions on Wednesday, also commencing at 10am. Viewing is from today until Sunday from 10am to 5pm.

In addition to the extensive Brink art collection, the lots will also include diverse African art collected by Professor Laurie Nathan, director of the Centre for Mediation in Africa at the University of Pretoria, during his African travels as peace negotiator.

The lots will also include African sculptures collected by Bernard Herzberg, a refugee from Nazi Germany who was an early contributo­r to the anti-apartheid struggle.

Other highlights of the sale will include:

An Italian Massa casting of an acclaimed Anton van Wouw sculpture, The Scout.

William Kentridge’s sought-after etching, Sleeper and Ubu, which has been exhibited at the New York Museum of Metropolit­an Art, and art icon Irma Stern’s charcoal drawing, The Scholars.

Exceptiona­l mid-20th century furniture, including designs by Earnes, Le Corbusier, Van der Rohe, Panton and Philippe Starck.

Several multi-million rand works by acclaimed artists will be on offer at Strauss & Co’s auction of “Important South African and Internatio­nal Art” at The Wanderers Club, Joburg, on Monday.

The sale will be staged in two sessions: 4pm and 8pm, with the preview running from today to Sunday from 10am to 5pm.
