TOP 10 OF SOWETO FASHION WEEK

- Thobile Mazibuko

OVER 20 designers gathered at the Soweto Theatre to showcase their Autumn and Winter Collection at the Soweto Fashion Week (SFW).

Here are our top 10 picks from SFW.

African printed jackets Thari brand from Soweto by Tshepo Mathari, who specialises in accessories and clothing, had beautiful African printed jackets and shirts.

His collection was colourful enough because although it’s winter, colourful clothes still make you stand out.

Double buttons Anything with more than one button on the front takes it all. Neguste of Xforay had a stunning white all-in-one with four black buttons in front. Black and white will always be a match.

Tsholo of Classy Couture, who was showcasing a kid’s range, had a stunning African printed dress.

Nicolas Mutambo of NicoStyle had a gold two-piece, pencil skirt and a blazer with zig-zag buttons on display. This combo brought pencil skirts back… in another dimension.

Denims No collection is ever complete without denim. Whether it’s spring or winter, denim has to be there. Reason Vilakazi of Konka Republic stood out with his denim and leather collection. From Classy Couture was the cool kid’s dungarees and denim pants.

Thick scarfs Note showcased very warm scarves and hats as part of the collection.

Blazers Formal blazers are for every season and Shaina’s stood out because of how she played it cool by adding an African printed handkerchief to add some African seasoning and still keep as formal as possible.

Velvet dresses Velvet is one of the dominating trends this season. Verdetto Couture could not miss on it and won over everybody with their black velvet dresses.

Colourful braids Different astonishing colours were brought up by Darling hair extension, but one that stood out was the navy blue braids. Still bright but not too much and blends well with most “winter colours”.

Red coats If you don’t have a red coat in your wardrobe, then I suggest you get one because every winter is a “red coat season” winter.

Red coats are important because they break dark colours and bring more life to the dry season. Nokwakha Creations saved us when it brought them to the market.

Maroon colour Every season has its own colour that changes from year to year. This year, maroon is in. Neguste of Xforay brought in a simple yet elegant maroon two-piece. Similar to Xforay, Deja Vu also had a stunning maroon two-piece – only for kids, though.

Leather No collection is complete without leather in it. Switch Couture showcased stylish leather pants with a brown jacket – a great choice because brown is the colour for autumn/winter.
