Lira to open concert for American sensation

- KARISHMA DIPA

SOUTH African songbird Lira will set the mood at this weekend’s Robin Thicke concert in Ekurhuleni as she opens up for the US superstar.

This is as the Feel Good hitmaker headlines the musical gathering in Boksburg, ahead of Thicke’s much anticipated performance.

The platinum-selling songstress will take to the stage alongside DJ Kenzhero, who recently joined local radio station Kaya FM.

The R&B star, whose real name is Lerato Molapo, is originally from Ekurhuleni, and her hometown is so proud of her that it recently erected a monument bearing her face at the entrance of Daveyton.

Molapo is one of the most successful South African singers and has won 11 South African Music Awards (Samas), with seven albums under her belt.

As one of South Africa’s most celebrated exports, the Afro-soul vocalist is expected to add a perfect fusion of soul, funk, jazz and African elements to the evening’s sound.

Meanwhile, Kenzhero, whose real name is Kenneth Nzama, is also no stranger to the local music scene.

The acclaimed DJ has been keeping crowds on their feet for nearly two decades and continues to do so with his ultimate mix show The Sound Supreme on Kaya FM.

Following the pair’s performances, US singer, songwriter and record producer Thicke will serenade the crowd.

Thicke has collaborated with several artists, including Christina Aguilera, Nicki Minaj, Pharrell Williams and Usher.

He is best known for his hits Blurred Lines, Lost Without You, Get Her Back, The Sweetest Love and Love After War.

The concert will be held on Sunday evening at the Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conference Centre.

Tickets are still available at Computicket and cost between R350 and R1 250.
