Breakfast ‘Home Invasion’ for Jozi with 947

THROUGH radio, broadcasters have the means to form a bond with listeners wherever they are. Whether it’s at their homes, in their cars, at work or even on their smartphones, people tune in to listen to their favourite presenters and engage with a particular station’s content.

For this reason, local radio station 947 will broadcast from various listeners’ homes across Joburg this week. In a first for the station, the morning team, led by media personality Anele Mdoda, will broadcast live from the selected homes as they ensure that all areas of the city are represented.

The Star, which prides itself as a newspaper that connects with Joburg residents at large, will join the 947 Breakfast Club during the “home invasions”.

The station’s manager, Khetha Mkhize, explained that in their bid to be Joburg’s number one music breakfast show, they wanted to do something to connect with the Joburg community.

“We wanted to create a sense of belonging by delivering relevant and relatable content, and we want to this by being fun, engaging, energetic and entertaining,” he said.

These sentiments were echoed by Mdoda, who said people’s homes is where they listen to the radio. “We wanted the team to go to people’s homes as that’s where they listen to us, that’s where the station’s heart and soul are.”

During the breakfast team’s “home invasion”, they will travel from the north to the south as well as the east and west of Joburg to ensure that all types of listeners have a chance to be involved.

This means that today, Mdoda and her team were due in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni. Then it’s Kagiso on the West Rand tomorrow, Eldorado Park in the south on Wednesday, Randburg in the north on Thursday and Midrand on Friday.

Mdoda said that when they decided to do the “home invasions” – which is a first for the station since they began broadcasting about 18 years ago – they got thousands of people who were interested in 947 broadcasting from their house.

The selection process was then based on the enthusiasm of the entrants, who promised the team delicious treats upon their arrival. “The listeners whose homes we are visiting said they would bake us bread and even make boerewors and biltong, so we’re very excited.”

But in a bid to give back, Mdoda said that together with online shopping website takealot.com, her breakfast team would identify what the family of the house they are broadcasting from on the day requires the most, and then get it for them.

“Whether it’s a new TV or even a toaster or fridge, we will try our best to get it for the particular listener,” said Mdoda.
