Citizens deserve answers

- Vijay Surujpal

STATE capture, just as with white monopoly capital, has become a buzzword when politics is discussed.

Concerned citizens understand the ramifications of state capture and its concomitant negative implications for our fragile economy, which is estimated to grow at 0.6% in this financial year.

This is compounded by our downgraded status coupled with inflation which is impacting on all of us.

The Hawks should act on allegations of state capture and commence investigations. As an independent Chapter 9 institution they have an obligation to give answers to the electorate.

The country cannot rely on President Jacob Zuma to establish a commission of inquiry into state capture as he is allegedly highly conflicted.

If the constitution gives tacit protection to elected public servants, then it’s a slippery slope we are manoeuvring on.

Sihle Zikalala said Zuma is not a Gupta “lackey”, meaning they may have acted in the president’s name but without his knowledge and approval.

However the facts tell a different story. He cannot escape culpability as he is a active enabler of state capture. It’s common knowledge the Guptas cannot act alone.

The country needs answers. Law enforcement agencies led by Police Minister Fikile Mbalula should be ordered to begin with investigations rather than wait for Zuma to appoint a commission of inquiry.

All those implicated in emails need to come clean.

Our democracy is not up for grabs by agents of state capture. Our country has suffered immensely therefore decisive action is required immediately. Phoenix, Durban
