Khanyile’s son is making his mark
JABU Khanyile’s son is fast following in his late father’s footsteps and already has a number of aspiring artists signed to his one-year-old media company.
Jabu Khanyile jr is forging ahead with his dreams despite his father not having wanted any of his children to pursue music.
Khanyile jr, 28, said his father always warned them about the financial challenges attached to the music industry.
“There are many times you go without a pay cheque. He wanted us to make education a priority, to better our lives.
“I guess as time went on, he realised it was a gift he passed on to us and eventually accepted it. You know how the arts industry is taboo most of the time, especially to black parents.”
In honour of his father, the DJ and music producer said he formed a company called Malowe Media last year.
It is named after his father’s iconic song Malowe, which was released in the 1990s.
According to Khanyile jr, his father performed the song at a ceremony hosted by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles in 1995.
He said his father’s death in 2006 affected him deeply because he was his very own superhero. More so, the death made him view life in a different way and forced him to take charge of his family life, as the first-born child.
“I also never feel pressured or feel the need to fill my father’s ‘big shoes’ because we do totally different music genres of music, and I just genuinely thank him for the life he gave me.”
The company deals with music and video production, PR and events. It also focuses on enhancing new media talent.
Khanyile jr has shared a stage with the likes of Lira, Dr Malinga, Zakes Bantwini, AKA, Khuli Chana to name just a few.
Khanyile jr is a former band member of the award-winning afro pop group Muzart, which disbanded two years ago under acrimonious circumstances.
“I don’t feel like a fallen star, because when I left Muzart, it was my decision.
“If something does not suit or fit your life anymore, it is best to just leave. There is no beef and no competition.”
He has also composed music, which he plans on working on with his song-bird mother, Khululiwe Sithole.
