Concert funds to help 300 deeply challenged

- ANNA COX

LITTLE Eden, a registered non-profit organisation, will be holding its fund-raising Christmas concerts from Friday.

The home provides lifelong care to 300 children and adults with profound intellectual disability in two custom-designed residential facilities – Domitilla and Danny Hyams Home in Edenvale, and Elvira Rota Village, a farm in Bapsfontein.

The home believes that no matter how profoundly challenged a person may be, he or she is still a complete being, with a body, a mind, a spirit and a soul.

The average age of residents is 26, but the average intellectual age is that of a one-year-old. Some function at newborn level and have to be fed, carried, changed and bathed. Others are able to manage tasks like feeding themselves, brushing their teeth, dressing and using the toilet.

The children are grouped according to their abilities and behaviour. Many residents also suffer from mental illness, disturbed behaviour and multiple physical disabilities.

Residents will perform the Christmas story this Friday and Saturday at the Domitilla and Danny Hyams Home, on the corner of Harris Avenue and Wagenaar Road in Edenglen, and on Friday, November 24 and Saturday, November 25 at the Elvira Rota Village in Bapsfontein.
