THE fourth annual Mandela Remembrance Walk and Run launched yesterday is expected to be even bigger this year.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation, Gauteng government and the City of Tshwane were part of the launch.

This fun-filled day kicks off Madiba’s centenary birthday celebrations at the Union Buildings on December 10.

Last year saw 15 000 participants and this year, organisers expect 20 000 fun walkers and runners.

Yesterday, Nelson Mandela Foundation trustee Tokyo Sexwale appealed to people to support the event and be involved in making the country and the world a better place.

This year, the walk and run is themed “Remembering Madiba: Deepening democracy and building an inclusive society” as a reminder to all to reflect on the society and the world Mandela envisaged.

“We are gathered in this safe space to remember Madiba. In his name, we always strive to remind people of his values in his own long walk to freedom.

“This event symbolises a commitment to Madiba’s beliefs and ideals. There comes a time, as a country, when we have to walk, and a time when we have to run,” he said

Sexwale said walking and running was symbolic for what all South Africans should do to catch up with the world. “We are behind and must walk faster and run to address some of the promises made.

“This remembrance must be seen in the context of health in general, because that is our wealth and should not be seen as just one sport in the form of athletics. Madiba was more than that,” said Sexwale.

“We have been asked as the foundation’s trustees to steer the ship, especially during these times, as we embark on this remembrance walk. “We appeal for thousands to beat the figure of 15 000 entrants last year. This is a remembrance of the big man himself.”

Proceeds raised from the entry fees will be donated to The Nelson Mandela Foundation to continue to preserve and promote Madiba’s legacy.

Speaking on behalf of Premier David Makhura, Ivor Hoff, chief director of sport and recreation, said a 10km run was introduced this year after a request from runners.

Hoff said walking and running helped everyone to remember Madiba’s sacrifices, courage and patriotism.
