‘Mediocre SABC’ needs to improve

- Kelvin Dyer

WELL said, Patricia Pleasance (“Mediocrity is the new normal at SABC”, The Star Letters, June 11).

Your eloquent and succinct letter almost mirrors my thoughts and were the subject of an e-mail that I sent to the SABC a couple of weeks ago.

This is what I had to say: “Just needed to give my views.

“SAfm used to be my radio station of choice. With the recent programme and presenter changes, I find it really difficult to find anything on this station that appeals.

“Now, before it is seen as some kind of ethnic or age issue, the spectrum of the public who used to respond were a representation of a wide range of South African (and other) opinions. Discussions and debates were wide-ranging and robust, while presenters were insightful.

“In particular, I give examples of the afternoon and early evening (drive-time shows). The former was varied, but now what we tend to have is a lot of self-indulgent chatter and inane laughter at some juvenile attempts at being amusing.

“With regard to Saturday and Sunday afternoons, South Africa is a sports-mad country.

“Most sporting events, local and overseas, take place on these days.

What has happened to the sports shows? Content was varied, one was kept up to date on latest news and scores, together with interesting interviews and listener participation. There are certainly enough other stations playing music.

While on the subject and for the record, I also enjoyed the early Saturday afternoon African diaspora music programme.

“Regarding sport, even Radio 2000 now has watered down sports coverage, with more music than sport – again while on that subject, the quality of cricket commentary has deteriorated in my view and commentators could learn a thing or two from the ‘professionals’.

“I am also echoing what others are saying and that a review might be considered.”

With due respect to them, I did receive a response reflecting that my message had been forwarded with high priority to relevant personnel, who would be in contact shortly. Sadly, I am still waiting.

As for SABC TV, I do not recall when I last viewed anything on these channels and I do not even have DStv. Glenwood, Durban
